Kathryn Kost, PhD, Guttmacher Institute
“Unintended Pregnancy in Texas and Beyond”
Dr. Kost is a demographer, studying both individual-level behavior and population-level trends in sexual and reproductive health. Her areas of research include estimation of the incidence of unintended pregnancy and teen pregnancy, of contraceptive failure rates and the impact of unintended childbearing on parents and families. She directs the Guttmacher Institute’s ongoing surveillance of state-level statistics on unintended pregnancy and collaborates with the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) to provide national-level pregnancy surveillance for the United States. Dr. Kost’s estimates of contraceptive failure rates are widely used throughout the U.S. and other countries for counseling women and couples in selection of a family planning method.
